Experience the universe in a whole new light with the Baader 2″ C2 Swan-Band Filter. Specifically designed for OIII (oxygen-III) wavelengths, this high-precision filter opens a portal to the celestial world, allowing you to capture mesmerizing details of nebulae and other deep-sky wonders.

Contrast gain for comet hunters

The Baader C2 SWAN-Band-Filter with ≤ 15 nm Half-Bandwidth isolates the two C2 lines at 511 and 514nm.

These two emission lines, named Swan bands after their discoverer, dominate the spectrum of a comet’s gas tail in the visible range. The filter allows only the light from the two carbon bands to pass through and, among other things, blocks the ubiquitous stray light, similar to a nebula filter in deep-sky observation. Structures in the gas tail thus become clearer even under good observing conditions. At the same time, it completely blocks the OIII line at 501nm and below, which other Swan-Band filters allow to pass. This allows for even higher contrast, and comets with gas tails can be distinguished even better from those dominated by a dust tail (and where a SWAN filter provides only a small contrast enhancement). For ambitious comet observers, a SWAN filter is part of the basic equipment.

Just in time for the introduction of the new C2 Swan-Band filter, a bright comet, comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF), offered itself as a test object. Our customer Andreas Bringmann was one of our first testers

This image was taken from the big city and with an almost full moon. You can clearly see the amount of “doubly ionized carbon” (the carbon excited to glow radiates only in the wavelengths 511 nm and 514 nm ) emitted by the comet. The filter shows the complete extension of the ion cloud around a comet:comet C-2022E3_ZTF

Certainly, let’s dive deeper into the features and benefits of the Baader 2″ C2 Swan-Band Filter (15nm) designed for O III (oxygen-III) wavelengths:

Oxygen-III Brilliance:

  • The Baader C2 Swan-Band Filter is tailored to capture the unique beauty of the oxygen-III spectral line. This specific wavelength is crucial in astrophotography as it reveals intricate details within emission nebulae, such as the famous Orion Nebula and the Veil Nebula.

Ultra-Narrow 15nm Bandwidth:

  • One of the standout features of this filter is its ultra-narrow 15nm bandwidth. This precision allows the filter to isolate and transmit only the oxygen-III wavelength while blocking out other unwanted light. As a result, your astrophotographs showcase incredible contrast and reveal the subtlest details of celestial objects.

Premium Optical Quality:

  • Baader is renowned for its commitment to optical excellence, and this filter is no exception. It is crafted with top-quality optical glass and incorporates advanced multi-coatings. These coatings ensure that light transmission remains exceptionally high, minimizing light scatter and preserving image integrity.

Reduced Light Pollution:

  • Light pollution can be a significant challenge for astrophotographers, obscuring the night sky’s beauty. The Baader C2 Swan-Band Filter serves as a powerful ally in this battle. By selectively allowing the oxygen-III wavelength to pass through while blocking artificial and atmospheric light, it significantly enhances your ability to capture celestial scenes in urban and light-polluted areas.

Easy Integration:

  • The filter is designed to seamlessly integrate into your astrophotography setup. It fits standard 2″ telescope eyepiece holders, making it compatible with a wide range of telescopes and camera systems. This user-friendly design ensures that both amateur and experienced astrophotographers can incorporate it effortlessly into their equipment.

In summary, the Baader 2″ C2 Swan-Band Filter (15nm) is a precision instrument that enhances your astrophotography experience by targeting the oxygen-III spectral line. Its ultra-narrow bandwidth, premium optical quality, and light pollution reduction capabilities ensure that you can capture the cosmos in all its stunning glory, revealing intricate details within nebulae and other celestial wonders. Explore the universe with unparalleled clarity and precision by adding this remarkable filter to your astrophotography toolkit.
